You did it. You have invested years of your time likely have more than $400,000 in student loans and have likely spent another $10,000+ to become a licensed dentist. You have likely decided to join a DSO or an independent dental practice and have signed a contract with a nice compensation and benefits package. It is time for you to begin serving your patients and promoting oral health and disease prevention. If it were only that easy.

You are not just joining a dental practice; you are also joining a business. A business that runs on UCRs for procedures and daily production targets. You will interpret radiographs and diagnostic tests. You will provide treatment plans that will improve and restore patient’s oral health. You will change people’s lives. You may also be a part of the 90% of licensed dentists who have a fear of being sued by their patients.  According to a study conducted by Dental Protection of more than 1,000 dentists, the following statistics were revealed:

  • 74% of dentists felt that the fear of being sued was affecting the services they were able to offer
  • 64% of dentists felt that the fear of being sued had resulted in them making more referrals
  • 98% of dentists believed that society was becoming more litigious
  • 79% of dentists were concerned about the impact this had on their welfare
  • 77% of respondents admitted that the fear of being sued had caused them stress or anxiety.

When patients complain, some decide to sue. State Dental Boards are responsible for protecting their citizens. In doing so, investigations into complaints are conducted and when founded or proven, a range of actions from patient reparations to professional remediation to retain their professional license may occur. Professional Remediation services are designed to address these issues via a consent order from the State Dental Board. Professional Remediation needs typically involve one or more of the following areas:

  • Poor diagnosis
  • Poor Risk Management
  • Poor Ethics
  • Over and Under Treatment
  • Issues around consent also often featured in clinical negligence claims.
  • Record Keeping
  • Periodontal disease
  • Endodontics
  • Fixed Prosthodontics
  • Implant Placement
  • Implant Restoration
  • Oral Pathology
  • Removable Prosthodontics
